ARTIGLIERI FRANCESI 1/72

A CAVALLO GUERRA NAPOLEONICA

The horse artillery was set up during the Consulate and was incorporated in the guards on 29th July 1804. They were given the same uniforms as the horse guards, in particular the traditional dark blue with red insignia for the artillery. This colour combination was retained until the outbreak of World War I. The real creator of the horse artillery as a permanent institution was Frederick the Great. This gave him a mobile artillery that was capable of keeping up with the marching army under all circumstances. The French General Lafayette, who visited Germany in 1785, saw these new units on manoeuvres at Potsdam and introduced them in France. Napoleon I then perfected the horse artillery which became his favourite branch of the service.
