    1999 VALENTINO ROSSI

    Fornitore

Valentino Rossi, whose nickname is The Doctor (also Valentinik, Rossifumi , Vale) (born 16th of February 1979 in Urbino), is one of the most successful Italian motorcycle drivers and a seven time World Champion. His trademark is the number 46, which he occupies for years, just like his father (Graziano Rossi). Besides his successful accomplishments in sports, Valentino Rossi is also famous for his nickname and his histrionic acting on the race track. He calls himself The Doctor and after victories he caries a rubber doll around with him as a companion or he stands on the podium and is dressed as a convict. He probably carries the nickname The Doctor due to the following reasons:
In Italy the nickname Il Dottore is awarded, when you are really good at doing something
He once stated himself that in the Moto GP Series one has to operate with surgical accuracy
In Italy many doctors exist, whose family name`s are Rossi
In Italy the addition of Doctor honours an outstandingly worshipped personality, and this title is awarded out of respect, even if they do not receive this title officially. For example Enzo Ferrari was also called Commendatore, although he was never awarded officially with this title. In the meantime Rossi enters every race as a real Doctor. The University in his home town Urbino has awarded the title of a Dr. h. c. in Communication to him. In the 1996 Season, Rossi rode a 125 ccm GP bike for Aprilia in the official 125 World Championship and in Brunn he accomplished his first pole position and victory. In 1997 he won the World Championship in the 125 series on an Aprilia. He was victorious in 11 out of 15 races. In 1998 he entered the 250 series and in 1999 he won the World Championship on an Aprilia RSW 250, with which he won 9 out of 14 races.
